Slim
Philips AVENT Fast is a slightly slow water heater. This device has a basic design that is easy to use and clean with a camera that fits most bottle sizes. It has an LED indicator that tells you when the cycle is complete, but it doesn’t have a real automatic shut-off function, so it can continue to heat the bottle if you don’t remove it from the unit. AVENT heats up slowly and will not reach room temperature if instructions are followed, with an average temperature of only 63F. In general, it’s not the worst heat in our tests, but fast is not the word we used to describe it as hotter.
Our analyses and test results
Philips started its activities in 1891 when Gerard and Frederick Philips, father and son, founded Philips & Co. in the Netherlands. Their original objective was the production of incandescent lamps and other electrical products. In 1895, his younger brother Anton Phillips joined the team and helped them become one of the leading incandescent lamp manufacturers. Royal Philips is a medical technology company providing products for healthy living, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and home care.
Equation of performance
The Philips AVENT Fast is a steam bath heater with a simple design that does not need to be turned off automatically.
Health and safety
AVENT Fast scored extremely high among its competitors in the field of health and safety. As a water bath, it is intrinsically safer than a steam bath and has a lower risk of burns. However, it does not automatically switch off and the bottle that remains in the room may overheat. It is equipped with an LED but does not hear a beep at the end of the cycle and must be switched off manually regardless of the setting selected. Setting an extra timer can help you avoid distractions, so you can remove the bottle at the right time.
At maximum settings, AVENT Fast can easily overheat the contents.
By following the instructions in the owner’s manual, this device will indicate the end of the cycle at 3:30 a.m. at 63F. If you leave it in a warmer state at the end of the cycle, it will reach 94 F for 12 minutes, which is closer to the ideal temperature and not harmful to your health. At the maximum setting, however, the bottle is overheated to 113 F, which is more than 104 F when the breast milk begins to lose nutrients, which can damage the small mouth.
Fast has a multi-setting button and an LED indicator that tells you when it is warming up from the end of the cycle.
Easy to use
This bottle warmer received one of the lowest ratings for ease of use. The manual for this unit is written in English, but we suspect that an Anglofoon didn’t write it, which could make it difficult to use later on. The instructions are curved for a seemingly simple process based on us in the bottle. On the other hand, place the bottle first and fill it up to the content line of the bottle, so that no action needs to be taken.
The Fast works with different bottle shapes, but is not compatible with every type of mother’s milk pouch.
There are no instructions for glass bottles in the manual, and there is no automatic shut-off to keep the bottles warm while they are still warm. An LED indicator indicates that the cycle has been completed, but the unit will not switch off until you manually turn the rotary switch to the off position. Since there is no beep at the end of the warm-up cycle, but you do want to be alerted, you must set a second timer, which is an additional task.
Odd timer
The Operator’s Manual indicates the warm-up time for different amounts of liquid. Intuitively, it makes sense to translate the increase in content into more time to warm up. However, this manual states that it takes 2 minutes at less than 4 to 6 ounces to heat bottles larger than 6 ounces, and 2 to 3 ounces 1 minute at more than 4 to 5 ounces. What for? We don’t know, but it’s something you need to know.
During the tests we used a glass bottle with a silicone sleeve, which could explain the lower temperature we tested, if we followed the manufacturer’s instructions.
Heating efficiency
Fast is not so fast, and even if it is fast, it does not heat up very much, which gives it a lot of points for its heating efficiency. At the recommended settings, it took 3.5 hours to reach 63F using a 4 ounce glass bottle with a silicone sleeve. With a perfect warming temperature close to 98, it can be too cool for some babies, especially those who breastfeed regularly. However, if you leave the bottle warm, it will continue to warm up and over time you will know how long it will take to heat the bottle to a temperature close to your body temperature.
Test temperature
You should always check the temperature of each food before giving it to your child. A few drops of liquid on the inside of the wrist are usually sufficient to determine whether the contents are too hot. Turn the bottle several times to mix the liquid and avoid hot spots for testing.
This heating element does not need to be cooled to heat the bottle, but if you use the same water as the first bottle, it can heat the second bottle to a higher temperature, even with the same settings.
The lower part of the Fast is not available, which means that you cannot wipe the hot plate.
Easy cleaning
AVENT has gained a little more than average for easy cleaning with few parts and a descaling every four weeks. The daily cleaning consists of emptying the camera, waiting for it to cool down and wiping the camera. Scrape every four weeks within 10 minutes with cold vinegar/water solution. The problem with this appliance is that the design does not allow the user to reach the hob, making it impossible to clean the appliance with a cloth.
