The natural crib mattress is attractive, but is it so comfortable for the baby?
You’ll be surprised how many chemicals there are in modern mattresses. This is why organic and purely natural mattresses, such as Naturepedic’s classic organic cotton No Compromise cradle, are so attractive to parents. It is safe to expose your child to unwanted chemicals. As beautiful as organic cotton is, the cannot make the for the most durable or comfortable filling for this particularly expensive crib mattress.
Update : There is a newer and better version of this mattress: Mattress in natural organic cotton. It still has the same level of support, but without springs and without welds.
I guess I never thought about what was in my baby’s mattress. I thought they made mattresses for babies the way they make mattresses for adults, and since I’ve slept on an adult mattress all my life and I’m fine, the same will happen to my baby. But after a few interesting articles about the construction of crib mattresses, I took a good look at what’s inside my baby’s mattress. And now I understand why the organic cotton filling of the best crib cover is so fantastic.
Uses organic cotton. In the Naturepedic Classic mattress bed, only organic cotton is used as filling material. What’s the problem? This means in the first place that no foam or artificial fillers are used. It is a consolation for parents who are worried that their child is accidentally exposed to dangerous chemicals while sleeping. Since it is officially certified as organic in accordance with the worldwide organic textile standard , the filling does not hide basic chemicals or additional chemicals. Cotton makes the mattress filling more airy.
But what about support? Cotton is certainly beautiful, but can it offer the same support as other materials? He can do it in this mattress. This cradle contains cotton wool, but also has metal inner spring. It has 150 springs, to be precise (hence the name), and an outer edge calibrated to 9. This is in line with the recommendations of the Commission on Consumer Products and Safety (CPSC) for a strong and safe crib mattress.
It’s flowing slowly. Despite all these good things, the mattress seemed to drown a little over time. The beginning was very difficult and apparently well done. This can be a defect in a certain mattress, but small funnels have formed all over the mattress. There was no need to launch or fail a mattress. It wasn’t that bad, but I can predict that in the near future a confident child will complain about the mattress.
What goes beyond that, also.
So back to the chemical problem. Mattresses not only contain potentially harmful chemicals, but also mattress covers. Naturepedic knows this very well and therefore the outer parts of the No Compromise Organic Cotton Classic Crib mattress are natural and suitable for parents.
Waterproof fabric. After having a baby who spit a lot and licked diapers, I soon realized how beautiful and waterproof things are. This is especially true for mattresses. I can’t even count the number of accidents that happened to my baby while he was sleeping in his crib. Naturepedic has found a way to make this mattress waterproof and at the same time stay natural.
The outer part of the mattress is made of 100% food grade polyethylene. A double curse, the polyethylene cover also serves as protection against bedbugs and dust mites. No doubt my baby and my mattress will be safe!
Edges can make the task difficult. A classic crib mattress from Naturepedic has traditional rolled edges, which have been a basic element in the design of a crib mattress for many years. It may not bother you, but for me I’ve seen the wonders of a seamless bed mattress. Personally, I prefer a seamless edge. Naturepedic offers a seamless mattress, and I feel like it costs more. It keeps things clean, both in terms of design and the ability to wipe the whole mattress clean (no place to hide waste or liquids).
Behind the scenes
We looked at the functions, design and other more scientific aspects of the Naturepedic No Compromise Organic Cotton Classic children’s mattress, so let’s look at the everyday aspects. The most important thing is that we look at the mattress as soon as it’s in the crib.
Square edges. It’s a really cool look that my son’s first mattress didn’t have. The edges of this mattress are absolutely square. Like an acute square. At first it seemed strange to me, but then I found out why they did it this way – it’s more in line with useful CPSC standards for the safety of cots. Because the mattress is constructed like this, it fits well in the corners of the bed and is also very close to the edges of the bed, so there is no free space for the baby.
Moreover, this mattress simply does not fit in some sheets. Ikea beds and some convertible beds seem to be particularly vulnerable in this respect. My Graco bed with a sleeping surface matches the mattress perfectly, but it was quite comfortable and hardly gave anything. Make sure you measure the actual space in your crib before ordering this special crib mattress!
Heavier than some. No matter how disgusting the traditional mattress foam is, it is man-made and infiltrated with chemicals, it has a redeeming property: it is very light. The same cannot be said of the cotton and metal bedding in all these natural mattresses. Although not very heavy, weighs about 20 pounds. I think that means that every time I change the sheets, I have a little practice, which can happen quite often. It’s not a dealbreaker, it’s something remarkable.
Allergies are friendly. What I really like about this mattress is that it is almost hypoallergenic. I suffer from asthma and allergies, and I’m sure one of my beautiful children will inherit these allergens. Because the mattress only contains cotton and no soy, latex, wool or allergens, I know that my baby will not have a cradle in the near future. What’s more, this amazing polyethylene coating keeps these mites at bay. The result is an allergen-free dream for my sweet baby.
I would be really unhappy if I didn’t mention the product safety aspects. And with crib mattresses that stay in our homes for years and see a lot of useful things, securing them is really an important point in the spotlight.
Fireproof. All those chemicals I keep mentioning? Well, the goal is to make the mattress fireproof. Because these foams and fillers are among the most flammable substances in any home, chemicals are added to make the mattress less flammable. With a Classic Naturpedic child mattress you don’t have to do all that. The natural materials used are less flammable than man-made products and fire safety has been taken into account during construction. The crib mattress easily meets all federal and national flammability standards.
Chemical emissions occur. Since all the chemicals in your clothing can affect the air quality in your home, you don’t want the mattress in your bed to aggravate the poor air quality in your home. Naturepedic has equipped its Classic mattress according to the GREENGUARD Gold Standard with lower chemical emissions. It’s reassuring to know that a cot mattress will not damage the air in your home and therefore the lungs of your sweet baby.
Warranty and performance
The last thing I want to mention is the agility of this mattress. You may think, who cares, but I like that this mattress was a , made in the United States by Amishemployees. These guys are really proud of their work and pay attention to every detail. I have confidence in my mattress because it is not mass produced by a machine that can ignore big mistakes. Because a family business is so proud of its product, it is covered by a limited lifetime warranty. This is important to me because it shows that the people behind this product really care about them and not just about the money they make.

I really, really love this mattress. The Naturepedic No Compromise Organic Cotton Classic Crib mattress is expensive, but I really feel like you’re worth your money. Thanks to the organic and completely natural ingredients, the child is absolutely safe from chemical influences in the nursery. It has a firm support, and although cotton seems to sink a bit over time, I think you would expect this from almost any mattress. I’m willing to ignore weight to get a stable, safe and well made crib mattress. My final conclusion is one of the best natural mattresses for a crib.
A recommendation: Pay extra and get a newer version. The Naturepedic organic cotton mattress now has the same support, without feathers, and still has the same ecological functions for growing children. Moreover, it is constructed on both sides and is seamless. It’s worth every extra penny.
