Chicco offers a number of impressive features with the Nextfit zipper. Is the price worth it?
At first glance, the Chicco Nextfit Zip car seat looks like a car seat that parents dream about. Thanks to the reinforced steel frame, incredible safety features and ease of installation, I was almost sold out. On second thought, I realized that some things could be improved and that this model might not have enough explosive power for your dollar.
Updated: An updated version of this chair, Nextfit IX Zip, is now available. Consult our review here. And look at all our reviews of the convertible car seat here.
Safety first and easy installation
Buying a car seat is one of the most important purchases a parent makes for his or her baby and, with hands down, the biggest concern is safety. The Chicco Nextfit Zip comes with a safety front panel. Chicco makes Keyfit30, my child car seat, the best choice because of its incredible safety features, so I had high expectations of Nextfit Zip. Like Keyfit30, Nextfit Zip is steel-reinforced and exceeds federal safety standards for crash protection.
The installation of this car seat was very simple: You may have the safest convertible child seat in the world, but if it is not properly installed, all these safety features are neglected. In fact, I despise the installation of car seats because I find it disappointing and exhausting. Normally my husband does the work, but because I’m the one testing the product, I put on my big daughter’s trousers, read the instructions and do the installation.
The man agreed! My husband made sure that the ease of installation with the features of Netfit Zip was really deserved, not mine. The LATCH connectors are pressed together and Chicco’s SuperCinch technology makes them, strangely enough, a spring to tighten and adjust them. The spirit level lets me know that the chair is tilted in the same way as when you look back and forth. So here it is, the setup is so simple that Mom, who can’t even put Melissa and Doug’s ass together, can.
The cooling tires! The Chicco Nextfit Zip’s five-point safety harness and sturdy headrest increase baby’s safety and can easily be extended as he grows. Designed for backward driving, the safest position, after 40 lbs, this car seat is a good choice. Like a selfish wart, I feel good and safe bending the children in Nextfit Zip.
- Reinforced steel frame and exterior
- Very easy installation
- Bubble arm counter for a perfect angle
- 5-pin amplification
Comfort is the key
During the breaks between sporting events, work, school and random outings, our children remember some serious hours spent in their car seats. That is why comfort is of the utmost importance. The Chicco Nextfit zipper has practical features to increase children’s comfort.
Denied! Reminder is important because it helps to stimulate sleep, which all parents love to do for their children, especially when driving long distances. Nextfit Zip can be set to nine different positions, which is unknown in the world of convertible seats. If you have a minivan or an SUV, you’re going to love this feature, but for me and my limousine it was impossible to lean back in more than three positions because the front seats were in the way.
Thick pads: The straps are super complete, which is comfortable for the baby, a feature that only this model and the Nextfit IX don’t have. Imagine being tied up for a few hours. The right stuffing is welcome. The shoulder and the padded headrest are easy to adjust, which I really like. After two hours in the car, my baby still hasn’t complained about a blunt buckle from his five-star exam.
Good landing: My good friend has a new baby, so we were able to test the baby insertion. Baby Anya, which weighs just under seven kilos, fits perfectly into the NextFit zipper thanks to the included baby insert, and the seatbelts are positioned just below the shoulders. For the first three months of a child’s life, I prefer a portable car seat, such as the Keyfit 30, because of the comfort and use of the stroller.
- Decrease in nine different positions
- Soft airbags and headrests
- Supplement for children
Loop fight and ease of use
Tying up an unwanted child or baby in a convertible is like fighting alligators in a swamp. No fun. I am happy to say that attaching my dear baby to this chair, apart from the atmosphere, was no problem. The Chicco Nextfit Zip bucket seats help the child sit up naturally and the thick seatbelts are not yet rolled up.
The straps above stay in place and the lining helps to keep the lower buckle in place so you don’t get pinched or injured by the hot metal.
Particularly heavy: I liked all the features of the Nextfit Zip, but you know what I didn’t like? This is a super heavy car seat that weighs over 26 pounds. When I really think about it, the weight contributes to safety, but because I had to carry it from house to car, then to my girlfriend’s house and in her car, I learned a lot about how it can hurt a heavy car seat (literally and figuratively). Convertible car seats like these are not that important because they usually stay in place after installation, but it is something to take into account if you travel by plane or change cars frequently.
With such a high weight, it is delivered in large quantities. Like I said before, Nextfit won’t just be in my mid-sized car. I love this seat, but since there is more than one child in the car seat, I will probably use a model that is just as safe but thinner than the Chicco KeyFit 30.
- bucket seats
- Screw-on hinges
- Heavy and cumbersome.
All minor exceptions
Chicco has a heat-insulating Nextfit cup holder with zipper that can be attached to either side of the car seat. My babies only drink water in the car, so temperature control isn’t really my main concern, and fortunately the usual coloured cups I use don’t fit in the cup holder.
If you like options, the Chicco Nextfit Zip convertible is available in a variety of colors. If you go shopping, you’ll probably find what you really need. Amazon offers three color variants, and Toys R Us offers several others.
The cup holders, colours, buckles and padding are all great features, but there’s one thing about the Nextfit Zip that’s so innovative that I had to give it its own section. Look at the flash.
- Thermally insulated suction cup holder
- Different colour variants
Lightning. Is it worth it?
Something special: Let’s end with what sets Chicco Nextfit Zip apart from other Nextfit models. T he closed the zipper. The entire interior of this convertible consists of a car seat, upholstery and everything that is knotted out of the body and is a carwash. When I was pregnant with my first child, I don’t think this function would have meant much to me, but as a mother of three children, with my fourth child on the way, a simple cleansing is like heaven on earth.
Car seats get dirty. In fact, to be honest, they get disgusting. Crumbs, spit, spilled drinks, contraband and leaking diapers will be charged. Your convertible will be awful. It seemed like a miracle to be able to close the fabric and filling and throw it in the laundry, but that miracle comes at a price. The price of Nextfit Zip is higher than the price of Nextfit (without zipper) Is it worth it?
Is it worth it? Yes and no. I’d like to pay $25, maybe even $50 for a very easy to clean car seat. Your child uses his or her convertible seat for three to five years, so it’s a small long-term investment. Is there a problem? The Nextfit Zip pillow must be air dried. This allows you to release the car seat while waiting for a new piece of washing machine pad to dry. If your baby vomits or spills something, you probably clean the straps and buckles by hand, so you might as well do it inside.
If you’re a neat freak, the flash function costs more. If you’re the kind of parent who cleans his or her car once a year, you can probably do without it.
Only the best for my baby
I’m not gonna lie to you, the price of that bad guy’s sticker came as a shock to me. I associate the Chicco brand with accessibility. Like Graco, I expect a durable and safe product at a decent price. It may not be the most beautiful convertible top in the driveway, but it’s a workhorse.
Fact is that Chicco has placed itself in the same price category as Clek or Peg Pegero with NextFit Zip. If I personally pay a lot of money for a super-safe car seat, I appreciate a certain amount of attention in the detailing that Chicco does not offer. I wish Chicoo would make more effort to make the Nextfit Zip doll and make nice color combinations.

When it comes to safety, installation and ease of use are incredibly important. Although all car seats must pass the federal safety tests, some are easier to use than others. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calculates a usage classification for each car seat in different categories. See the evaluations below.

The super-safe Chicco Nextfit Zip is an excellent choice for long term car seats. With adjustable seatbelts and headrests, from 5 to 40 pounds in the back and 22 to 65 pounds in the front, he’ll be able to see your baby comfortably until he reaches school age. It is the ideal car seat for parents who cannot install it and has cool features such as nine reclining positions. The zipper function for easy cleaning looks great, but it doesn’t really cost more. Our offer, go with Nextfit CX.
